The Brief

MGC was instructed to carry out essential safety glazing replacements at a fully commissioned NHS building in Stevenage. Several stairwell windows were fitted with outdated 6mm clear float glass, which is a non-safety specification that posed a risk to staff, patients and the public. Unfortunately, some panes had already broken and were temporarily boarded and the building’s management needed a compliant and cost-effective solution.

Our Approach

Following a rapid site survey, our team confirmed that the existing tilt-and-turn timber frames were structurally sound and could support an upgrade to clear laminated safety glass, eliminating the need for full frame replacements. This recommendation significantly reduced both cost and disruption to the building.

Four large windows spanning from the ground to the third floor were included in the scope. Within three days, the made-to-measure safety glass arrived. Our experienced commercial glazing team carefully removed the original non-safety panes — a high-risk task given the brittle nature of float glass at height. MGC managed the process with precision, adhering to all relevant health and safety protocols.

New laminated safety glass units were installed in the existing frames.
Each unit carries the appropriate BS kite mark for safety certification. Laminated glass contains a PVB interlayer between two panes, meaning if broken, the glass remains bonded and does not shatter or fall, significantly improving occupant and public safety.
